What business does an aging post-punk has-been have making a kick-ass rock record with Twin Tones, one of Mexico's hottest young bands? Last anyone heard, Green on Red's Dan Stuart had moved to Oaxaca from NYC to escape reality, not that anyone cared. Sure, after a decade and a half gone missing, he had released both the LP and book, The Deliverance of Marlowe Billings, in 2012 and 2014 respectively on Cadiz Music in London, but outside of some grudging critical respect, really a sympathy fuck for days gone by, plus some sporadic touring, well the planet could get along without Stuart's morbidly self-righteous world view just fine. His inability to lighten-up and endure life's little insults like the rest of us had grown old and tired, like Stuart himself. Okay, you went away, now go away. Still he refused...

Marlowe's Revenge started in a concrete bunker in Oaxaca, where Daniel Sanchez Jimenez was more used to recording Oaxacan banda than depressed gabachos. Stuart wandered in one day with a dozen songs written on an opened tuned cracked Martin that mirrored Stuart's psyche perfectly. The old gringo made the young engineer accompany him live with a 10 peso little black egg shaker or beat on an ancient phone book with an open palm... he was a card carrying union percussionist after all. The result was promising, simple chord changes but in interesting voicings with a strange propulsion not always in time but always somehow right. The songs were about love and loss, murder and revenge: Stuart's usual laments but with a spark, like a fire had been lit somewhere deep in his distended belly. Pleased with the results, Stuart became curious and wondered if he could find a band to play some of these songs, a Mexican band that wasn't a caricature of Mexico herself. So he did what anyone would do, search Youtube and he found them...

There name was Twin Tones, no the. They came from Mexico City and played instrumental music with some of the same Ital-Mex influences as the last band Stuart had recorded with, Sacri Cuori from Italy. But they were younger and rawer, and spoke little English but with a rock n roll accent. Stuart sent them a FB message and barely got back a reply, yes we have a studio and we do our own thing, who the fuck are you? Now this is where it gets weird... turns out they had mutual friends and acquaintances, people like Steve Wynn from The Dream Syndicate and Danny Amis from Los Straitjackets, the world was indeed a frighteningly small place. So on his way to Europe to play some loserfest, Stuart dropped by the lads studio in gritty Ecatepec and started the second half of Marlowe's Revenge. The first song they recorded together was Soy Un Hombre, and indeed Stuart had become a man again, stiff boner and all. It was immediately clear they had a garagey sound but one in England somewhere and rented from gypsies. Pleased, Stuart sent Twin Tone's leader and now his producer Gabriel Lopez some of the Oaxacan tapes and told him to overdub what he wanted, make yourself a nice margarita. The results blew Stuart away and so the whole enchilada was smuggled up north to JD Foster to mix and the rest is... well not history exactly but still something worth listening to if you give a shit about stuff like this.

So there you have it, the making of a real rock record, maybe the last one ever, who fucking knows? Certainly not Stuart, he's too busy enjoying Mexico City, where he just moved to be closer to the action at age 54 no less. With any luck there will be some live shows with Twin Tones but let's face it, no one really wanted this to happen, and now that it has there are some that would prefer that it would just go away so the world can get back to its predictable shitty self. But not Stuart... he's just getting started.

Track Name: Hola Guapa
hola guapa soy yo
did you hear I had to go?
hit by a bus just the other day
didn't make a fuss, well anyway...
you'll get my ring
wear it from your neck
try not to choke on it
ah what the heck...

hola guapa it's me again
guess what honey they dig my sin
ain't no warm glow just a clown or two
did you miss your show? well boo hoo hoo...
you've got my heart
save it for a rainy day
or cook it on the grill
ah what the hey...

you'll get my money
I wish it was more
are you happy honey?
what's a husband for?
adiós guapa I gotta run
it's been real, too much fun
Track Name: Elena
every time I see you Elena I go wild
you so very near to me Elena keeps me riled
I see your light glowing below
are you home or giving a show?
Elena I wish I could let you know...
every time I hear your name Elena
well I get that sweet taste of fresas con crema
I'm going mad with you so close
you're like a shot of the perfect dose
I'm ready oh I'm ready the devil knows...
every time he sees you... Elena
he wants to be with you.. Elena
this old heart is ready to bleed
for a new love why can't you be
the one for me... Elena?
Track Name: Last Blue Day
the cats are hungry
I feed them their fill
and take a long walk
right over the hill
it's my last blue day
a double rainbow
appears from above
down to the valley
to the city I love
it's my last blue day
it's my last blue day
darkness greets me
as I open my door
the rope on the crossbeam
hangs to the floor
it's my last blue day
I hear a dog barking
as I crawl into bed
my books are my lovers
it's all been said
it's my last blue day
it's my last blue day
Track Name: Soy Un Hombre
I'm a man
who has always loved you
no matter what the world had to say
but you decided to leave
with another less worthy than me
so now you see the truth
written in front of you
soy un hombre
que siempre te ha amado
no importa lo que el mundo tenga que decir
pero tú decidiste dejarme
por otro menos digno que yo
y ahora tendrás la verdad
escrita en tu frente
you know I've been all over this world
and I've seen the sun shine so bright
but I never met another girl
who kept me up every night
Track Name: The Whores Above
I found a baby in the street
took her home she cleaned up sweet
threw her in a pot with yesterday's wine
now I'm feeling superfine
you're the one I used to love
now I'm dancing with the whores above
and rain on you every chance I get
don't forget to pick up the check
I lost my mind on an overpass
tried to jump but they snatched me back
they threw me in a room with yesterday's news
held my breath and wailed the blues
I found a kitty in the street
took her home she cleaned up so sweet
threw her in the tub with yesterday's wine
and now I'm feeling superfine
oh so fine
plain out of my mind
you're the one I used to love
now I'm playing footsie with the whores above
I love them China girls too...
hell I love every woman except you
Track Name: All Over You
I bought you a chocolate ice cream cone
but you had to answer your phone
now it's all over you
I heard you cried when our boy left home
but baby you still got your Cuban toad
has your dream come true?
I'm all over you
no one cares that your hair ain't grey
there's younger girls that want to play
and they laugh at you
I'm all over you
watch me fly guitar in tow
there's so much you'll never know
has your dream come true?
I'm all over you
I'm all over you
Track Name: Name Hog
I'm listening man
have you got something to say?
because you make a new record
every other day every other day
you're just a name hog
we all know that's true
tonight are you playing as the Dylans?
or Waterloo or Waterloo?
yeah I know I can hear you okay
but the songs you're singing
mean nothing today
nothing fella... go away!
still I know the kids are out there
so come and blow my mind
I'll try to catch you at The Basement
the very next time the very next time
you're gonna blow my mind blow my mind
I'll even wait in line...
Track Name: Zipolite
over the mountain they say there's beach
with two deserted islands just out of reach
oh yeah... uh huh
and down from Seattle there came a surfing dude
with a head full of voices and a stomach full of 'ludes
oh no... oh no
one day he went a swimming way out past the break
to the black island he had a deal to make
oh yeah... uh huh
if you seek salvation well never mind the lord
my thoughts will always guide you this machete is your sword
oh no... oh no
all these hippies camping they're nude in the sand
doing yoga in the moonlight and chanting to the band
oh yeah... uh huh
sacrifice by morning and take their money too
buy yourself a burger it'll taste better than you knew
oh no... oh no
now he lives in Puerto and he rents his fins and boards
he's always got a smile he believes he's the lord
oh yeah... uh huh
he keeps that machete handy and he's waiting for the day
the voices say they're hungry they need to get paid
oh no... not again
Track Name: Over My Shoulder
once there was you and then there was me
dancing across time... infinity
no one really knows how the story goes until it's over
I can't stop looking over my shoulder
you were the girl I wanted to be
out in the world acting so free
no one really knows where the river flows until you get there
I can't stop looking for a safe shelter
once there was love so easy to see
but tears of shame rained down on me
no one really knows how the story goes until it's over
I can't stop looking over my shoulder
Track Name: The Knife
don't ask me what it means to live a good life
I've wasted so many years sharpening the knife
I've been luckier than most, swam in an ocean or two
and I've had exalted feelings that sometimes were true
I tried to pay attention and be aware
that in the end we're just a prayer
so here we are together all alone
with only our dreams to carry us home
